Custody and Parental Responsibilities
Child Custody cases are difficult for families. Recently, Illinois changed its laws regarding custody and visitation. In the light of the changes, the court will now allocate parental responsibilities. The specific terms will be set out in the Parenting Plan. Those terms are often agreed upon between parents. Other times they are decided by the judge.
Significant Decision-Making
Firstly, the parenting plan addresses significant decision making. However, we used to refer to this as joint custody and sole custody. Joint custody essentially meant making decisions together. Sole custody meant one parent was making the decisions. The four components of significant decision-making are health, education, religion, and extracurricular activities. Furthermore, the law allows for parents to make some decisions jointly and others solely.
Parenting Time and Visitation
Secondly, families need a parenting time schedule. Parenting time used to be known as visitation. However, now there is an emphasis on the role of the parent. A schedule should include the school year, holidays, vacations, and special periods.
